    It took 75 years for telephones to reach 100m people, 4 years for FB, 2 for Instagram, and months for Candy Crush. All coding at scale is now inherently political—we can no longer afford unintended consequences. Was an honor keynoting at Slush this year.

    Sputnik is the top story on google when searching for Kerch Strait (followed by UNIAN and RT). Where’s Reuters, AP, NYT, etc? Why is this still consistently happening? Google is allowing its algorithm to be manipulated. We need algorithmic transparency. Now.

    This is *the* top misconception about social media algorithms: that they give people "what they want". But watch time and clicks are not enough to know what people actually want For instance, many lies are good for watch time & clicks. But people don't want to be lied to 1/
