UPDATE: #Saudi women’s activist Wala’a AlShubbar was released. Like three released yester/today, her name wasn’t listed in official statements. She was also arrested later on May 21. Unlike three, Wala’a is from new feminists that grew active in anti-guardianship campaign of 2016

Three released
#Saudi women’s activists of 1990s were sadly initially not in good spirits & closed off. Fourth newer activist@W_Shubbar_ tweeted upon release: “I love you all”. See for yourself *immense* outpouring of feminist support in endless replies:https://twitter.com/w_shubbar_/status/999997355842662400?s=21 …Nora Abdulkarim نورة الدعيجي added,

UPDATE: More importantly, a few activists arrested yesterday (at least two) & rumors of more to follow. All generally within same activist circles, but different main causes & levels of public presences. What links them all is they have been far more quiet, if not silent, lately.

Today marks TWO WEEKS since arrests of
#Saudi feminists on May 15, 2018. Very worrisome trajectory for their cases as "traitors". Even those released still have travel bans. Incredibly sad to see strong activist voices fear to offer whisper of support to their fellow feminists.1 reply 5 retweets 6 likesShow this thread -

As promised, I will now get to recommendations (and not) of articles on

Nora Abdulkarim نورة الدعيجيVerified account @Ana3rabeyaI have done my best to keep up with the coverage of#Saudi women’s rights activists arrests, although couldn’t read every article written. I will recommend a few articles below from what I have read. And will “disrecommend” a couple particular takes on the arrests as well.Show this thread1 reply 1 retweet 2 likesShow this thread -

The cleverly-titled article by
@POMED: "Saudi Arabia: No Country for Brave Women". It provides good overview of the feminist activists, context of their arrests, as well as details on#Saudi twittersphere and media coverage of their arrests.https://twitter.com/awhawth/status/998658860251582466 …Nora Abdulkarim نورة الدعيجي added,

The
@GulfStatesInst article by@kdiwaniya: “Internal Political Realignment Targets#Saudi Women Activists”. Explores paradoxical state actions, i.e. feminists arrests after PR efforts, and potential rationales. Key take-away is: “all politics is local”.http://www.agsiw.org/internal-political-realignment-targets-saudi-women-activists/ …1 reply 0 retweets 2 likesShow this thread -
This article by
@MadawiDr. It places#Saudi feminists in context of three waves of arrests: Sep 2017, Nov 2017, & May 2018. She argues commonality is state motivation to consolidate power, and concludes: "After all, who said feminism isn't political?".http://www.middleeasteye.net/columns/saudi-arabia-house-cards-mohammed-bin-salman-determined-spread-fear-and-eliminate-dissent-1841123352 …2 replies 8 retweets 11 likesShow this thread -

The preceding articles on this list were mostly by academics and analysts. As for reports by journalists, the best (i.e. fuller details & better accuracy) come from those that have been covering
#Saudi for awhile. Prime example is@Ayaelb’s piece for@AP:https://twitter.com/ayaelb/status/998930305020059648 …Nora Abdulkarim نورة الدعيجي added,
Aya Batrawy @ayaelbHere's the latest about the case: Arrested#Saudi activists held incommunicado since last week. No access to a lawyer. 7 of the 10 had sent request to govt to start an NGO to provide shelter to domestic abuse victims. 7 arrested women; 3 are men https://apnews.com/f123b286992244b691fd72e4c7a2889d … (from@AP) pic.twitter.com/AqgDGYXfijShow this thread2 replies 1 retweet 4 likesShow this thread
