I'd like to see their fundraising decks. Right now, you can get a subscription for $45/yr. Multiply that by 100K subscribers - $4.5M annual revenue. 300 FT employees - let's say average employee cost is $90K (prob low). That's $27M. Doesn't factor freelance/advertising. 1/2

so what am I missing? So "regular" price is $60 per year so let's say $6M revenue. At these numbers (not including advertising and other admin costs), they'd have to quadruple or quintuple subscriber base to break even. Smart guys making investment here but lot of questions 2/2

Just because there are investors doesn’t mean it’s a good investment.

A lot raised but they aren't helping themselves by hiding behind a paywall. Could have a much larger revenue stream with a couple tweaks to their model.

I have no problem with it. Its worth it. Just like I pay for the Wash Post.

Yup love not having ads. I’d pay twice what I currently do.

It's not that you still can't have no ads. It's that they are losing money by not having a flexible model that supports both options. Or at least an ad-supported preview option. I read the founders piece about why he doesn't do ads, makes a lot of incorrect assumptions.

I am surprised they did not at least go to a 3 free reads a month model. Especially with local sub sites, I am sure many readers would like to compare what they get vs. the daily paper.

Are you kidding me?! I would never have guessed that the Athletic was this successful. It's got great writing, but i was not a believer in the viability of the subscription model & price point. Glad to be wrong!

They’re raising VC money because their model isn’t profitable (yet, at least).
