This is not the focus if this article but for the record, PR had before María and still has the highest GDP per capita in Latin America. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_%28PPP%29_per_capita …

Oh well, all those deaths really paid off then. Jesus, do we really need this after the week we've just had? Really?
-
I hear you LJ, but I respectfully disagree. I think following the devastation last year, we can't forget Puerto Rico. We must keep talking about it, every development, until we solve the crisis on the Island and they live the same quality of life we expect Americans should live.
-
(I don't think this article was suggesting that the hurricane and the thousands of deaths caused by it was a good thing. It's suggesting that a long forgotten place in the U.S. has a chance to turn things around, if we continue to pay attention. And clearly, some are.)
-
I understand that. I just think that given what the people of PR are still enduring today, this long after the event, focussing on an economic silver lining is a slap in the face to the long suffering people and capitalism at its basest.
-
I can understand how it could be read that way. But I guess I don't. It's a huge problem that won't go away and if we don't all take it seriously and deal with it soon, when will we? Anyway, we both want the same thing -- to help the people of puerto rico and never forget.
-
Absolutely agreed. Perhaps my reaction was too emotional. This week has created raw nerves for everyone I think. Hope you are doing well. Enjoy following you. Have a good week if possible.
-
Absolutely. My nerves nearly are shot. It's been tough. 9 days til the Midterms. Then I hope we can rest!

I’d wish the US would cut them loose... they are expensive

Give Puerto Rico and District of Columbia statehood and the senators and representatives to which they are entitled.
-
Puerto Rico has votes for statehood and continues to vote it down.... they don’t won’t to pay taxes. They are a territory so they get benefits ..none of the costs.
