If a child walks into the road too close to stop. The only other option is to swerve into a oncoming semi truck. What does the car do? Are programmers working on “moral” decisions? #askaxios

Moral decisions are tricky. Programmers are just beginning to address. MIT study was fascinating: https://www.technologyreview.com/s/612341/a-global-ethics-study-aims-to-help-ai-solve-the-self-driving-trolley-problem/ … I think V2V or V2X technology would add a layer of context to help with those decisions. - JM

Why are people so excited about self-driving cars but won't support a 21st-century public transit system? 🙄 #askaxios

People like their privacy; one solution is a series of two-seat pod cars linked together on a high-speed transit system. But I agree today’s transit systems need fixing. - JM

The first uses will be in shared fleets in geofenced areas and under good conditions. Buying a personal driverless car is years away. - JM

How equipped is the AI to handle driving on roads without clearly defined lane lines and other markers? For example, if you're visiting an event/attraction that is parking cars on grass fields, how would the AI navigate that? #AskAxios

There are a lot of instances where the driver still needs to be control. This is one. But I think this underground radar from @Wavesense is cool. It maps the earth below the surface to help with night, snow, etc. - JM

Cybersecurity landscape being what it is, will self-driving cars have manual overrides so that humans can intervene should systems get corrupted during transit? #AskAxios

Today, with assisted driving techs, you can retake command. But when there isn’t a steering wheel or pedals, I would expect a simple kill switch that tells the car to pull over. Waymo has that now. - JM

These ethical issues have yet to be worked out. MIT surveyed 2 million people about what they’d do. Answers are fascinating: https://www.technologyreview.com/s/612341/a-global-ethics-study-aims-to-help-ai-solve-the-self-driving-trolley-problem/ … - JM

#AskAxios what is the programmed priority of the car in relation to the driver versus pedestrians ? In other words will the car risk the life of a driver to avoid hitting pedestrians?
