The rising price of insulin has created a multibillion-dollar business for the pharmaceutical oligopoly that controls the market — and a deep sense of anger and fear among people who need the drug to stay alive.https://www.axios.com/outrage-prescription-drugs-insulin-prices-7a9c0a90-9329-4214-9ab9-b11d45578f51.html?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=organic …

This is wrong. It isn’t that patients “don’t want” to switch,it’s that Walmart insulins act differently than Hum/Novolog. It requires a vastly different treatment schedule &many Drs don’t know how to prescribe it. Randomly changing to R/NPh can =dangerously low blood sugarspic.twitter.com/N7jMTqZHea

It’s a 2nd class treatment, better than dying of DKA, but this shades things as “diabetics are babies just use this cheap insulin” w/o acknowledging the many, many flaws, not the least of which is “wealthy ppl can have modern stable insulins, the rest of you good luck with this”.

Ok, sorry, I’m not done. This also doesn’t acknowledge that a large portion of ppl do not live near a Walmart, nor have adequate transportation to Walmart, or if they do, have time enough to take public transportation to-from Walmart and remain employed.

R/NPh also require you to eat on a strict schedule, and dose 30min before eating. If you work shifts, your employer is unlikely to be sympathetic to you needing to break, dose, break again to eat, repeat in 4hrs, despite the fact that this is covered in the ADA).

and finally, supply and demand dictates that if we went the great lengths to switch to Walmart insulin, Novo would pull the deal and invoke the list price of “Walmart insulin” which is around $200 a vial.

Don't forget that according to studies, NPH/R cost as little as $2.15/vial to produce. That's a 10x multiplier on a 40-something year old formula. Even Walmart insulin is overpriced.

And the production process for “Walmart insulin” vs analogues is identical. I think this argument pisses me off the most because it plays into people’s ignorance that WE MAKE DOSING DECISIONS every minute and need to know the ins and outs of WTF we are dosing. Cant just switch

Why does every insulin pricing story include comments from Craig Garthwaite? He knows nothing on the topic and worse, he’s a troll to the chronically ill. Do better, news media. There has to be another economist you can interview that doesn’t actively harass sick Americans.

Insulin has increased 1,200 percent since 1996. 9/10 congress accept pharma donor money. throw in the lobbyists who wine dine congress handlers. They don’t care that 1 out of 2 diabetics is rationing insulin. They will care when these ppl have complications end up on Medicare.

Also, all kinds of diabetes will be declared a “pre existing condition” if the Gropers keep control of Congress. I think they see anyone who is poor, or sick, or both, as a drag, and want to speed up the process of dying to get rid of us.

Dr. John Rengen Virapen worked 35 yrs for Eli Lilly & Co as an exec. He speaks out on crimes Big Pharma was and is responsible for and he himself also participated in. Many of its crimes go passed public awareness as it enjoys the unethical protection. Quote him. Follow him.

Sanofi has engaged in unconscionable conduct. They promote unhealthy eating while raising the price of insulin. Unfathomable .... no ethical accountability AT ALL on any level, even their marketing is corrupt.pic.twitter.com/TxErZ95ku2

There is Democratic outrage, but the GOP is all in on this, and on reintroducing “pre-existing conditions” as a way to bar insurance because they get bigger paychecks from Big pHarma than they do from the citizenry. #VoteBlueToEndThisNightmare
