As scientists. we are tasked with the advancement of humanity as a whole. If this task is in jeopardy, we cannot, should not, and may not stand idle by. No matter whether this is due to individuals, groups, governments, or even humanity as a whole in a suicidal fit.

Very important point. I'd add that all scientists deserve a life, and it's not only a hardship for those with kids but for anyone who has any other committments!

At school and curious about physics? We offer the international master classes on particle physics 9th of March - get to know particle physics and work with real data and real scientists - including myself, giving you a heads-up on what we (don't) know 🙂

And because of the guilt of far too many scientist, I think it is very important that all research proposals today are evaluated, and have to discuss, ethical issues and dual use due to the research. We need to take a stand and take care.

We organize an joint workshop of philosophy and physics on the role of gauge symmetries and what particles are on 5th-6th of November 2020 - see for details. That will be a really interesting event with a lot of discussions and intensive talks.

Science only thrives with the support of society. For this support, science and scientific results needs to be transported back to the society. This requires also independent, fair and critical media of all kinds. And investigative, if science-internal control of conduct fails.

To measure the rate of b quarks decaying to c quarks you can use all b quarks and measure how often they go to c (inclusive). Or you consider specific particles with a b quark (exclusive) and then average over all such particles. Both should get the same answer but they don't.

Of course such strong claims require a lot of evidence, and this is exactly what we will work on in the next few years. And, of course, I will be happy for anyone who tests this as well, as independent confirmation will be terribly important for a potential paradigmatic change.

If we can confirm it, this will fundamentally change the way how we perceive elementary particles, and also alter the landscape of potential extensions of the standard model drastically.

I just got a project funded on this, which the referees called 'potentially groundbreaking' and 'one of the most original in lattice field theory in many years' in which we will test René's predictions as well.

We have worked on this quite a while, and provided already some previous investigations and actually also support from lattice simulations that physics can be fundamentally different than expected with usual analysis, see my review
