meshoptimizer 0.18 is released! It contains several improvements to simplifier, which I'm resuming the R&D on, as well gltfpack improvements with new extensions support, texture compression improvements and minor fixes. As usual, ⭐️are appreciated!

A year ago we open-sourced #AlphaFold Today we're freely sharing the predicted structures of all 200M+ proteins known to science - almost the entire protein universe! It's our gift to humanity, and a demonstration of the benefits AI can bring to society

Tornados now seem even scarier after seeing this and realizing that they can be mostly invisible (vs. "Twister" 1996's early Hollywood CG). It's mostly the dust and debris that give the ones shown here some semblance of visibility.

Highest-res drone footage of the Andover, KS #tornado which has received a preliminary rating of EF3. Note how the tornado propagates via vortex dynamics and likely terrain. Incredibly, no lives were lost by this tornado

I'm impressed with the water in Elex 2. It properly flows around obstacles and has white water simulation. Someone really put some work into that. In general they put out some awesome stuff with a team of only about ~30 people I believe.

Funny story: #Journey had no automatic shadows. I painted them all by hand. The shadow texture was not hi res. To get the iconic sunset columns to cast sharp shadows, I made sure that they aligned with the pixel grid of the texture. Here you can see the shadow map I painted.

Usually don't comment on politics, but Germany's proposed new LNG terminals would be stranded assets before planning and construction is done. I hope they will be persuaded to invest in renewables, heat pumps, grid and storage instead. We don't need more external dependence.

No more tests. No more delays. Now Webb will fly or die on its own. Congratulations to the thousands upon thousands of scientists, engineers, technicians, and bureaucrats who pushed the hardware and paperwork across the finish line.

None of this stuff makes videogames any better. It doesn't make them more fun or interesting. It just turn them into proxy financial instruments, corrupting their core design and exposing them to market forces that will enrich some, but exclude and disappoint most. This sucks.

Slightly late to the party, but we officially reach menus on all games except one (That we know of) which needs a special controller emulation! Plus all known games at least show something! This is a celebratory moment for PS2 emulation! 🥳
