hello! for the past decade I've been building bespoke, a free modular synth environment with python livecoding support for mac/windows/linux you can find the code and get builds at and if you scroll through my feed, you'll find a bunch of videos of it

back in 2014 for my 30th birthday, I held a daft punk themed party and built a no-skills-required setup to allow attendees jam along with and remix daft punk songs. it was a fun time. here's an incredibly blurry picture of it.

I guess the fact that I added this feature after 10 years, and am excited about it, means I'm finally growing up. I hope I don't become boring!

also coming soon to bespoke: an in-app editor for the userprefs.json file, which previously was something that had to be edited by hand. no more typing magic values and hoping you picked a valid buffer size!

bonus: all of the tooltips are stored in an external text file, "tooltips_eng.txt", but you can point bespoke at another tooltips file. a motivated user could translate the file, to provide full documentation for other languages that I could include in future builds

and it's a lot easier to write documentation in this way, since it's all piecemeal, instead of a large interconnected system that needs to be reworked every time I add functionality

getting started with bespoke is hard, because with so many modules and controls, it's tough to find your way around. effective documentation for a large system is both hard to write, and often hard to use. a detailed tooltip system should be a great in-context way to learn

coming soon to bespoke: tooltip mode! (...after I finish writing all of the tooltips...)

what an incredible looking thing. basically bringing a sweet vertex shader into real life existence.

one issue I've had with adding push 2 integration to bespoke is that I'll add a feature, then weeks later I'll come back and forget which button does what, or how to use it. I just found my obvious solution: use push 2's huge display to describe usage while pressing the buttons

as a synthesizer dork, I want to acquire synthesizers and optimize my music production workflow, so that ...?

I am so impressed by Koala Sampler, every element is designed to be so obvious and fluid to use. the new features are no exception, and include some awesome new tech. I'd highly recommend checking it out.

just came across an ancient video I'd put up of bespoke in 2014, back when I'd "only" been working on it for 3 years. it's really wild to see what it used to look like!

for the FM dorks, I think it's equivalent to this "algorithm" (although I have the feedback on 2 in the patch, instead of 4 like this diagram)

here's the (much more boring) patch that I started from, where I was actually using oscillators as FM operators, if you're interested in that sort of thing

I started experimenting with using bespoke oscillators to modulate each other like FM operators, and then somehow this ended up happening🤷. the fun part about working in modular systems is that it's easy to endlessly tumble down rabbit holes

the target audience for this functionality is approximately 1 (just me)

one great thing about writing my own music software is that I can add native support for all of the weird input devices that I love collecting. in other news, bespoke now has native support for using the SpaceMouse to navigate around the canvas and adjust sliders
