.'s April blog threw some cold water on my enthusiasm for Quarto. #rstudioconf2022 has convinced me to migrate some R Markdown to Quarto. Better error messages and autocomplete in YAML headers will 100% benefit my students.

It's a great idea.
Would prefer if the medallion gave owners the annual right to buy a permit for the current price and if a tax of say 10% was applied to every medallion transaction. There needs to be some annual revenue gained from all of the urban space committed to parking

This is an excellent proposal. I'm jealous that @mattyglesias came up with the idea of converting parking passes to taxi medallions - it caps street parking and flips residents' stance toward parking demand 180°. twitter.com/mattyglesias/s…

This was wrong.
We should aim for shade networks like we aim for bike networks.* Most of the bike networks are pretty sad.

American cities should get serious about shade infrastructure. There should be shade networks like there are bike networks.

End: my understanding is that in addition to shade/limiting the urban heat island effect, trees/grass can ease pressure on sewer systems during big rain events, which can increase with climate change.
So this can save some $$$ too.

I actually think downtown DC (L street, K street, etc on the left), should cover all of its sidewalks with something like what's on the right.

Is there an American city that wouldn't benefit from doubling its number of trees?
For all of the rhetoric about climate change, urban areas appear to have done very little to mitigate the effects of climate change.

5, again: After two years of pandemicky weirdness, it's possible that remote work is getting better as a general purpose technology while working from home is getting worse as a consistent experience, for a lot of ppl.

Simultaneously true things:
1. Remote work is generally great for owning your time, cutting commutes
2. Revealed preferences show many people cherish WFH
3. Polls show a minority of every age group wants to WFH full-time
4. Young workers are most eager to add back some inperson

Reckless drivers killing pedestrians is a problem that disproportionately impacts low-income neighborhoods — we shouldn't accept the view that lax enforcement is somehow progressive.

In a lot of jurisdictions this is a tough call to make because loss of driver's license can be so devastating.
But DC is a city with an extensive transit system and we should have very little tolerance for moving violations.

Quarto chunk options look like little YAML headers. This seems clear and powerful. Can't wait to learn more.

#quartotip 1: Use the layout-ncol chunk option to organize output in columns, e.g. layout-ncol: 2 for two tables side-by-side.

Great article about the real villains of America's urban housing crisis. It also defines gentrification, which too many articles/papers/arguments fail to do.
