As @SeanTrende points out a lot of people argue both that the GOP is a terrifying extremist party, and that Dems have little or nothing to fear from ditching the filibuster. And those arguments sit together oddly. https://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2021/06/21/would_nuking_the_filibuster_really_help_democrats_145959.html …pic.twitter.com/cZV6amMcui

If you hate what Rs are doing in swing state legislatures you should probably be *at least a little* nervous about what the national GOP would try to pass in a filibuster-less world. Maybe the trade-off is still worth it. But "they don't care about laws" is a comforting fiction

Well one reason for getting rid of the filibuster would be giving DC statehood, which would help keep control of the Senate.

Under the current framework they get the policies they want (tax cuts for millionaires, FedSoc judges) with 50 votes. The terrifying extremism comes at the state level and from terrorists running ppl over with their cars. The ideas aren't in that much tension.

Sean seems to be assuming that Rs will not get rid of filibuster and 2) that states’ will permit a D to be declared the winner. Keeping the filibuster means only the Rs get to set policy, given the number of R states. So elections won’t have consequences.

I mean, they literally didn’t get rid of the filibuster even though President Leroy Jenkins was tweeting about it every other day for months.

Without the filibuster, the Dems could pass popular legislation and dare some future GOP majority to rescind it. CF Obamacare repeal attempt 2017. They could also pass voting rights and anti-gerrymandering laws that would tend to reduce incentive for GOP extremism.
