@protonmail If you allow your app to be distributed directly via the Huawei store, what protections do your Chinese users have against manipulation of your app by Huawei to track them and bypass your security? I posit none.

We covered this in our original blog post here: https://protonmail.com/blog/android-expansion/ … "whether it is Apple, Samsung, Google, or Huawei, regardless of how you download your apps, you are also relying on your device manufacturer to safeguard your privacy"

You don’t think it’s irresponsible to market communications security to Chinese users via an untrusted supply chain? People in danger will use your app- you’re implying a level of trust in delivery that isn’t there

…this is exactly why I’m questioning the ethics of offering your service there. You’re marketing a security you can’t provide.

The point is that the service is already there. As a software manufacturer, our role is not to tell users what they can or can't install. It is instead to give as many options to the user as possible so they can make that decision.

You’re more than just a piece of software. People entrust their lives to you, whether that’s in your business model or not- that’s the market you operate in.

Look, clearly we see this differently and I want to be civil, but I find this fairly disappointing behavior from a company that does what you do and promises what you promise.

They’re just saying that if you put their software on insecure hardware you probably don’t have privacy. Should linux foundation take steps to prevent linux installation on bad hardware? You have to take responsibility for your own security at some point.
