NEW from me: After years of playing third fiddle to solar and wind power, geothermal energy is poised to start growing again in California. The state will get its first new geothermal plants in nearly a decade, with several contracts signed this month:

Consider: millions of years ago our antecedents gave a massive sacrifice of their left hemisphere. We lost a tremendous amount of short term memory and replaced it with Broca’s, Wernicke & the phonological loop. But why? So we can—talk. Thus chimpanzees can do this—we can’t:

Key elements of the checklist: * due dates * name of school/position * status of application ("submitted", etc.) * status of each letter (to be marked "done" by writer) * notes (e.g. "I'm hoping to work Prof. X here. Possibly note in letter.")

The online approach also applies subtle pressure to the letter writers because two of their peers can see when they're late! And the applicant can see if any letters are missing without having to send unnecessary requests.

An online spreadsheet (use Google Sheets) is far superior to mailing back and forth an Excel file or, worse, coordinating by email. (Prof: "I submitted letters A, C, D, and F. Did you decide against B? When do I need to submit E and G? What about H?" Student: 🤯)

The checklist allows your letter writers to see at a glance if they're caught up. No more hunting through emails searching for requests. ("Did I miss one? Did I submit that letter?")

If you're applying to grad school / postdocs / faculty jobs, please please please use an online checklist for your letter writers. Give them access and they can check off their progress themselves. It's waaaay easier for them and will save you time and sanity, too.

Looking for a suggestion for an audiobook on some scientific topic that can be played during a 5-6 hour drive. Tomorrow I'm taking my class on an overnight trip to Palomar Observatory and we could use something inspiring (not necessarily astronomy) to pass the drive with.
