Our #1 goal with GitHub Sponsors is to increase the number of maintainers who can work on open source full-time The holistic, long-term view a dedicated curator and architect brings is priceless In other words, I'm ridiculously excited to see Caleb on this journey! Good luck 💖

I often want to ask people, "Do you find that a constructive way to talk to others?" Unfortunately, asking that question is not a constructive way to talk to others.

Maybe the only transferable "lessons" are to see how people act to new, terrifying situations. Not so much their specific actions, but their outlook, their behavior, their commitment to values, the way they weigh and evaluate alternative s.

"History Repeats" seems mostly wrong to me. Events may have a superficial similarity, but digging deeper their circumstances--be it power dynamics, culture, technology, etc--make each one vastly different, such that it's impossible to transfer lessons between them

Learned today that CS Lewis's name is Clive Staples Lewis and can't get over it. Like finding out it's Benjamin Television Franklin, or Winston Post-it Churchill

Was going to say the lesson here is not to be too down on yourself, but in Adam's case these thoughts probably gave him a sense of urgency that fueled many of his achievements. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There was so much [John Adams] wanted to know and do, but life was passing him by. He was twenty years old. "I have no books, no time, no friends. I must therefore be contented to live and die an ignorant, obscure fellow." --John Adams by David McCullough

My 64 y/o mother-in-law revealed to us at Christmas that she spent this past year “learning to play the fiddle,” no one in the family had any idea; and then she played, beautifully, a dozen songs for us without looking at sheet music while we sat at the table in awe. (1/2)

And done! This contraption records the temperature of my house every minute! Not sure how I'll apply this yet, other than detecting if my house catches fire while I'm away. Feel accomplished nonetheless!

Helping people is hard. Giving advice to people is rarely effective. Much advice boils down to: here's what I'd do if I were you. The trouble is that although you may see a way out of a given predicament as you imagine yourself facing it, you are not the one in that situation.

Facts about Nobel Prize-winning scientists. They are: • ~25 times more likely to sing, dance or act than the average scientist. • 17 times more likely to create visual art • 12 times more likely to write poetry • 4 times more likely to be a musician.

it is legitimately world-shaking to learn that being sufficiently outraged at evil, determined to protect the vulnerable, and committed to the forces of Good...is not *remotely sufficient* and I feel for people who resist that it hurts like hell
