Grew up in England and wasn't exposed to this amazing idea until I was 23 years old and in America :) I think the British version involves competing to take the smaller half and then being mad at the other person if they allow you to.

When kids me and my brother were tasked with doing the dishes. We were not thought the concept AFAIK, but we come up this: one would split the dishes and the other would choose. Seemed fair to us.
