1/ I learned something about myself today. 6 years ago, when Asher was born, an ultrasound incidentally discovered he had a fairly common congenital heart defect, a bicuspid aortic valve. This hasn't caused any complications for him, and generally doesn't until later in life.

2/ Since there's a genetic component, my wife and I eventually got screened (with no symptoms, this wasn't a high priority). Today mine came back positive, though again, with no complications so far, barring a minor regurgitation of blood the wrong way across the valve.

3/ I'm tweeting mostly because there's something kind of weird and fascinating about discovering that something as fundamental as the shape of your heart has been different your whole life from what you thought.

BTW a bicupsid aortic valve is called a "fish mouth valve" because it looks like this when it's open. (A normal valve would split three ways).pic.twitter.com/JXI3mNVWjO
