I found this a pretty cogent description of an under-discussed problem around how work at tech companies is often evaluated and rewarded. Not an easy problem to solve, but people having this experience seems to be common and is obviously broken.

The best thing you can say about that system is that it incentivizes work on projects that are obviously urgent and can be completed quickly. That's not necessarily a bad heuristic! But it's like trying to live on glucose; long-term survival requires a little more balance.
