So I was surprised to learn that firing even a single-shot rifle on the island is illegal; turns out this stems from a single incident in 1968. I'm sure this was frustrating to a lot of hunters, but when I hunt here (and I plan to) I'll do it with a crossbow.pic.twitter.com/XcbjLC31VA

didn't know that story! I was always told it was proximity of the houses. Tragic, though you could solve that in other ways than an outright ban.

Agreed, I think it was likely an overreaction, but it's an interesting example of society adapting to tragedy and trying to find the right tradeoffs.
