Some holiday reading notes: @fondajlee's Jade City is great, a well-realized gangster/family drama in a fantasy Hong Kong; part Godfather, part Mistborn, probably also drawing on lots of HK cinema references that I'm not getting.
The first two books of @arden_katherine's Winternight series were a compelling intro to medieval Russia and Russian folklore, but (to my taste) would have been better at half the length and with half the fairytale mortal/immortal romance cliches.

Finally, Noumenon fell totally flat for me. It covered the same ground as KSR's Aurora but was a worse book in every way; and I didn't even like Aurora very much.

Oh, I also read
@betanalpha's Conceptual Introduction to HMC (https://arxiv.org/abs/1701.02434 ) which was totally worthwhile, but compared to the others was lacking spaceships and/or magical jewels.Show this thread

In my defense, I live for a good cliché and 50k is a pretty short novel...
