Is it possible to play the same game with git/diff? Code diff is computed in the "storage format", and then re-rendered according to individual formatting preferences?

No reason why not, but it would make it harder to use file + line number as a way of referencing a particular piece of code. (eg when looking at logs of builds of CI, or sending links to code on github)
