Why are all airlines SO BAD? Oh right, because there are no margins and there’s no incentive to improve because we’re all forced to keep paying them because they’re all terrible but we have to go places. 
So is the genius of Ryan Air that it moves more of the purchasing decisions to be in the moment? I guess this is the same principle as free-to-play + in-app-purchases for games?

Ryan definitely knows its demographic, which I think could be key. It’d be pretty awesome if airlines had more of an identity themselves, and therefore attracted likeminded people.

consider how much you'll pay for inflight wifi vs what savings you'll accept to fly at a less optimal time. It's much easier to accept tradeoffs where you experience the downside in the future
