Whenever some company tries to make a plea to increase clickthroughs on emails I just unsubscribe. How has this not been figured out by now?
do you mean the pattern of cold-emailing, and then following up at two-week intervals "in case you missed it"?

I've started replying to those to let them know how irritated they've made me. And then unsubscribe.

No, things I was legitimately interested in (books, etc) but then the "Click through to see an amazing deal" emails.

in general, ads/products on the web do not have enough mechanisms to gather negative feedback (vs absence of positive feedback)

... which IMO leads to skewed beliefs about the optimal strategy (I guess this is like a moral hazard, but only in perception)

it's tough to see how closing off a segment of your customer base is viable
