Lazytwitter: sustained uploads saturate my ADSL upstream, render my network unusable. Is there something something traffic shaping I can do?

@avibryant Try a pfSense router with CoDel or priority given to ACKs on WAN interface. May also be possible with DD-WRT or VyOS.

@alexyakoubian what compact, quiet hardware would you recommend for running pfSense?

@avibryant Yes, but the details depend on your router. Some routers have decent QoS, but many are ineffective and/or difficult to configure.

@avibryant That router does have QoS. Might not be enabled by default. Some QoS implementations are poor, so YMMV, but it's worth a try.

@bbhoss @avibryant another vote for pfsense, if you've got a low power machine to run it on. Highly accessible BSD firewall = awesome.

@avibryant Any router that can do ACK prioritization. Most linux or BSD-based do-it-yourself firewall distributions will do it.

@avibryant But I have a vague recollection that BT traffic is more difficult to shape. But can’t find a reference for that now.

@avibryant I recall Ubiquiti routers being able to do traffic shaping (because they can do everything)
