Brian Caplan presents the case for the null hypothesis on whether parenting matters: http://static1.1.sqspcdn.com/static/f/468275/26581519/1443970707010/rs144transcript.pdf?token=bbTwsoLYtIuMjYG35DTsvocxYSg%3D …pic.twitter.com/svJmPXCQk0

@patrickc I'm sure no parent can read this dispassionately, but I think "whether parenting matters for economic outcomes" is more accurate.

@patrickc many parents seem to agree that their kids are who they are the moment they're born—lots of personality evident at once, etc.

@patrickc if your goal is creating a strong family rather than just improving economic success, maybe you view this data differently.

@patrickc why you might want that (happiness and so on) overlaps with his conclusions but I don't think is dismissed by what I read here.

@patrickc anyway, an interesting read. I completely agree that soccer or tae kwon do classes drive many parents mad for no apparent reason!

@patrickc but, you might value a strong family regardless of the measurable happiness of its members, too.

@marcprecipice @patrickc I've heard this as: how you parent may not change who they are, but it sure affects their relationship with *you*.

@avibryant @marcprecipice Yes. Part of my takeaway was that you should just optimize for mutual enjoyment & not worry too much about macro.

@patrickc @avibryant among other things, if you have a child "by disposition [a] downer," a strong family might be the support they need.
