I've been thinking about my aversion to what-feels-like predatory dating apps, and also how they don't line up with the flirting literature.

Much like in real life when dudes talking to me without invitation or continued interest feel predatory.

Flirting starts with eye contact. Remember the whole smile-and-look-away-then-look-back-real-quick game? IT IS REAL AND IT IS EFFECTIVE.

And when a dude approaches a lady (this literature is ~not new, so p heteronormative), it's actually because she's signaled him to come over

The whole effect is so subtle folks don't even realize what they're doing. They're just attracted to one another.
