As Stripe approaches the headcount of Twitter as it was when I started there, I'm increasingly fascinated by how different the orgs are.
-
-
As another example, Twitter had exactly one remote engineer (
@rael). Stripe has teams which are majority remote, including remote managers. -
And, of course, Stripe has much, much better data infrastructure (because we get to use all the OSS work Twitter did in the following years)
-
@avibryant this pseudo tweetstorm of yours is going to work wonderfully as a recruitment device. Also, fascinating. Thanks for sharing! -
@cbrumelle you know, Colin, you’d be very well positioned to come experience the same contrast…

@avibryant which should not be a surprise as the the founder’s center of gravity are quite different. (product/design vs engineering) -
@mabb0tt yes, and the nature of the product is quite different too. On the other hand many of the engineering challenges are very familiar. -
@avibryant my point is that the culture of the company is set early on and does not shift dramatically - regardless of common eng challenges -
@mabb0tt yes, understood. It all makes sense, and is perhaps unsurprising; just interesting to me to experience the contrast. -
@mabb0tt as for the common engineering challenges, I just hope Stripe rises to them as gracefully as Twitter did. -
@avibryant sure you will - apply learnings ;) “management of many is the same as management of few.it is a matter of organization.” -sun tzu

@avibryant no product mgrs? -
@vijayv@avibryant yeah-- no PMs? Tell me more about this magical place. -
@josh_wills come visit. We'll give you a t-shirt. Good for a raise at your local employer. /cc@avibryant -
@marcprecipice@josh_wills@avibryant Da fuk?! I came and gave a whole talk and didn’t get a t-shirt! -
@peterseibel We'd love to get you a raise t-shirt, but first we have to get feedback from your peers and submit it to the t-shirt committee. -
Seems the
@stripe t-shirt compensation committee decided@twitter should give me a raise. Thanks@marcprecipice.pic.twitter.com/m8pejI9P91

@avibryant Sign of building a product designed for developers? -
@xcbsmith@avibryant In the case of Stripe, that's probably what you want :-) - End of conversation
