"View from Nowhere" On the cultural ideology of Big Data:http://thenewinquiry.com/essays/view-from-nowhere/ …
@GarrettAdamPeck not to say there isn't a lot of bad science in tech, because there is. But some people are bad at their jobs in any field.

@avibryant That's undoubtedly true; however, I think it's fair to say that tech could be, well, a little more diverse. No? -
@GarrettAdamPeck no argument there. -
@avibryant I just think anytime you have a more or less similar kind of people doing any one thing there's going to be a bubble effect. -
@avibryant Which is unavoidable in certain cases. I just get uneasy when terms like 'objective' start to get thrown around. -
@GarrettAdamPeck yeah, that's a silly word to use for this. The main recent lesson of "big data", IMO, is this: -
@GarrettAdamPeck if you have an immense number of examples of subjective human judgement, you can surprisingly often extract a template, -
@GarrettAdamPeck which can be stupidly applied by a computer to simulate similar subjective judgements in the future - not perfectly, -
@GarrettAdamPeck but if the type of judgement is simple and structured enough, then enough to be useful. - 3 more replies
