This is an fantastic article in a lot of respects http://blog.valerieaurora.org/2014/10/03/operating-systems-war-story-how-feminism-helped-me-solve-one-of-file-systems-oldest-conundrums/ … …

… one of my take aways is that you can solve user's problems by paying attention to them and not just explicitly asking WAYRTTD

I really believe that a developer responding to a user with WAYRTTD is one of the most patronizing things a developer can do

@snoble it seems like the fundamental problem is not asking WAYRTTD but not respecting your users

@b0rk I think they are related. it's being compassionate to their problems and it's solving the problem that the user is asking you to solve

@b0rk the previous solutions failed because they solved what the developer wanted to solve instead of what the user asked

@snoble @b0rk ... but isn't that exactly what asking WAYRTTD does?

@avibryant @snoble maybe depends on why you're asking WAYRTTD -- "so I can help you get it done" vs "so I can tell you you're wrong"

@avibryant @snoble I feel like I see a lot of "lol no what why do you want to do that?! that's dumb." from developers

@b0rk @avibryant @snoble it often feels like WAYRTTD has a subtext of "ah, you're confused".

@collision @b0rk @snoble yet sometimes you can be much more helpful if you understand the underlying goal. How do you politely ask for that?

@avibryant @collision @b0rk... what in the question needs more context? prove you've attempted to understand the question.

@avibryant @collision @snoble maybe you could say what kind of extra information you could tell them if you knew the underlying goal?

@b0rk @avibryant @collision @snoble Yeah, or alternately explaining why you don't understand the request can help (if non-patronizing).
