Why does the AR Drone seem to be the only quad with a simple control API? Is it not practical to control an RC transmitter from a laptop?

@rich0H "drone" "open source" "uses BLE" "has no firmware to support these sensors" siiigh@avibryant -
@starsandrobots@rich0H so maybe I'm being dense here, but: if you can bind an arbitrary 3rd party RC Tx to commercial drones... (1/2) -
@starsandrobots@rich0H ... can't there be a Tx that plugs into USB and relays instructions from the computer instead of the sticks? -
@starsandrobots@rich0H or is that pointless since you can't get any sensor info back? -
@avibryant@rich0H I haven't used one but some brief searching turned up this http://www.endurance-rc.com/pctx.php and http://milehighwings.com

@avibryant the state of tech here is pretty nascent — hackaday just had a reasonable piece on this: http://hackaday.com/2014/06/06/droning-on-flight-controller-round-up/ … but tbh after .. -
@avibryant .. the AR, most of these boards by the "I hear you like optimizing control systems!" crowd (or "hey ARDUINOS!" (or both)) -
@starsandrobots right, I'm not looking to redo the control systems the drone already has. I just want to be able to automate my own input. -
@avibryant So, you might consider using DJI NAZA + android + IOIO board: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/11343 -
@starsandrobots We need to talk drones f2f! -
@teich certainly!
