Does your company give a programming exercise to candidate to solve prior to interviews? If so how do you feel about it?

@skamille Yeah, we do. I really enjoyed solving it, and it means I don't have to ask people to code on the whiteboard.

@aphyr What do you focus your interviews on?

@skamille I ask for stories about problems they solved, bugs that were tough to track down, etc. Try to explain what I work on, and how.

@skamille Get a sense of what motivates them; what problems they like thinking about, etc. Mostly I try to imitate @joedamato and @d2fn.

@skamille Usually I look for code on github to get a sense of their code style, algorithms, comments, structure, docs, etc. Having a code...

@skamille test levels the playing field for candidates who can't contribute to OSS because of their company or life obligations.

@aphyr That I definitely agree with. I'm struggling with the idea of getting a candidate in front of enough people w/fuzzy interviews tho

@aphyr Like, I think it's very hard to give a good interview w/no code writing, but I want lots of people to meet candidates

@skamille Most folks here do ask code and algorithmic questions. I think I'm on the weird side in asking about large-scale design problems.

@aphyr @skamille I've noticed large-scale design problems can help to sell candidates ("oh, these guys work on interesting things!") vs algo

@avibryant @aphyr Seriously. Algo is a total turnoff to me in an interview. I have so rarely had to do anything algo in my career. zzz

@skamille @avibryant We do a fair bit of heavy bulk algorithmic work so I think it makes sense here. I come from a different culture is all.

@aphyr @avibryant Yeah it has to make sense for the company you're hiring into. Too many people rely on algo when they never use it.
