I just bought a Tapp water filter from YVR locals @twothirds_water. You should too: http://www.indiegogo.com/Tapp?contribution_success=true&pledge_id=1649125 …
@dbarefoot I'm with @bmann on this. Patents only allow them to maximize profits at the expense of social good. That ain't social enterprise.

@avibryant@bmann Under what circumstances should a social enterprise defend its intellectual property, then? -
@dbarefoot@bmann 2. patents only make sense to me as a way to attract non-socially-minded investors, as a way to get the enterprise going. -
@avibryant@bmann I'm no expert in this, but aren't patents also a means of defending against knockoffs? -
@dbarefoot@bmann seems a cheap, non-working knockoff wouldn't need to violate the patent. Only a proper clone would, which has social value -
@avibryant@bmann Fair enough. I don't really understand enough about the world of patents to make a good case either way. -
@dbarefoot@bmann I don't claim to be an expert either, and clearly there are nuances, but from a branding POV they don't matter much... -
@avibryant@bmann Indeed, though there may be a little reassurance value in "We're serious about this--we filed for patents". -
@dbarefoot "we're not serious about doing good, so we've filed patents" is what it says to me (I understand@avibryant & I likely edge case) - 1 more reply
