My wife and I have twins on the way. One thing I've noticed: the number of people who've told us that we absolutely must purchase an SUV in order to haul them around. When I was young, I remember almost all parents of two kids doing fine with a sedan or compact car

In the mid 90s people seemed to start switching to minivans and SUVs. But I'm inclined to think this is more a hedonic treadmill thing, and since we rarely drive anyways now a small vehicle really won't be a problem

I drive a compact car with two kids (Nissan Leaf). But: one dynamic worth considering is that a car with 6+ seats makes carpooling easier. Nice to fit the kids + grandparents in the car, or as they get older, their friends for trips to pool/movie/whatever, rather than 2 cars.
