Gawd yes. I approached it from the Pharo side but there's no real comparison around nowadays it seems or even the mindset that something like it is needed which is the real tragedy IMO.

I've never seen this kind of env that seemed compatible with the way FP devs think about code/semantics. Smalltalk/Lisp envs are very open that there's a (virtual) machine under there with memory slots, an instruction set, artifacts like stack frames, and give you access to it.

You need to be comfortable with exposing the runtime internals to the user and doing things that would not normally be type-safe or allowed by access control, in order to (eg) build a debugger.
