I've managed to sneak NonEmptyList, Validation, and State[S, A] into this ... so calling it a win this week.

Hah Mark. I like implicits and type classes, for solving _certain kinds of problems_. But they are more of an all or nothing kind of solution. In that case, wanna help with this Trait subtyping/extending companion object kludge I've gotten myself into :)
