I wonder if one reason image-based languages like Smalltalk don't thrive is that with file-based languages like Python you basically are always throwing away your old code with each new project and never have to face most of your bad decisions.

I know you're basically joking but when I worked in Smalltalk I would start a new image every month or so and load code in from version control. Like copying out a marked-up paper draft onto a fresh sheet of paper.
