Take a look at
@stencila -
Thank you for the mention
@jimpick! Indeed@stencila implements the reactive paradigm allowing for more spreadsheet-like behavior but allows for using Python, R etc Would be happy to hear your thoughts and feedback:https://community.stenci.la/

VisTrails tried this, still around I think. Table-oriented, cells can have computed content including graphics. But stayed researchy; had perf and packaging issues; too early/missed github community effect. (python meant it was too slow for graphics use-case too, IMHO).

MevisLab is better-executed (bit closer to labview for medical imaging). It’s a phenomenal piece of software, but historically non-free so lives in a small niche of “used by a few German companies for RAD.”

@jack thinks that spreadsheets were the first type of abstract software invention that didn’t have a good physical analogue? (I’m probably not explaining this as well as he could.) -
Accountants and business school graduates called the paper originals spread sheets first. Dan Bricklin invented the desktop computer version,
#Visicalc, because he was tired of erasing his spreadsheets for each revision for cash flow projections.

In what sense would you prefer notebooks were more like spreadsheets? A better REPL like workflow?
