This is not a serious inquiry but does anyone know what the yearly operating and moorage costs would be for https://victoria.craigslist.ca/bod/d/50-man-floating-camp/6674350102.html …? I'm amused by the idea of boosting local housing (whether Gali, Van, or SF) by plonking this at a marina somewhere.

I mean, $700k USD for a 165' yacht is amazing, if you can overlook the lack of any propulsion or seaworthiness.

The 40' beam (width) will make it a tough fit in a marina. 11' draft also prevents it from anchoring anyplace remotely shallow (like the calmer, east side of SF bay). To tie up to a dock, that thing needs a berth like a small cruise ship or ferry would use.

Which is to say, hard to park anywhere with a large population. You're probably talking about negotiating a multi year lease with a ferry port or some other contract not easily quoted per foot. Or paying for construction of a 175' dock.

I've occasionally (read: not at all seriously) floated the idea of buying a small cruise ship like this one, and using it basically as an incubator: https://www.pacificboatbrokers.com/used-boats-for-sale/PS4460/steel-charter.asp …

Peter Thiel also had similar thoughts, parked 12 miles offshore, with guns permitted. Obviously he never spent any time offshore, out of the site of land. People go nuts and do bizarre things

Mike you would make a great captain of this as you know both tech and sailing! And US<=>Canada sea lanes

Yes, I know enough to know that Mr. Thiel's idea is completely idiotic and I want nothing to do with it. People do crazy shit when isolated, in close quarters with no way out, and the weather gets bad. Add guns and I would not set foot on board that kind of vessel for anything.

I mean a simple non-crazy version of a floating incubator that can be docked most of the time. E.g. moved to fun events/locales...

There a number of issues that would need to be addressed. It would be an interesting project.

Maybe purpose build offshore housing’s time has come? How many micro condos could you stack on a barge?

Union Steamship Marina on Bowen says $0.54 per day per foot for annual contract. So for your 160ft, $2600 per month. Plus some liveaboard fees? Power metered separately.http://www.unionsteamshipmarina.com/marina/rates-services/ …

I’m sure someone must have thought about anchoring an old cruise ship off SF. Surely?
