Sundial v1 in place. Fully expect it to get trashed by sheep and weather over the course of the summer, then I can build a stronger better v2.pic.twitter.com/OYxiKCpep8

What would you use? I’d love to be self-sufficient in producing it with the glowforge; I feel like ideally 1/4” teak or oak or mahogany if I could source that in 12” widths.

Acrylic would be easy but I’m loving the way it looks in wood too much.

Copper would probably be pretty nice

have you tried any metals w/ your shapeoko? I've only done wood so far.

I've done nothing :/ It's a pass-on gift, and it came in a fairly beefy enclosure I haven't had time to wrangle into something usable

I made the worst enclosure for mine. I need to make a new one that's lighter. The shapeoko3 is really great though, it's a lot of fun.https://medium.com/thiswillwoodwork/a-home-for-mildred-538a4fe15c1a …

The pros of this vs glowforge seem obvious. Any cons?

In terms of what you can make? I think no cons (very accurate, thicker cut depth, no burn residue on edges) In terms of operations: Very loud, needs (loud) dust collection, need various end mills, can have slow cutting time, more software to learn / toolpath planning is harder

On what you can make, betting you're not gonna beat the laser cutter for kerf width. Not gonna work with paper or vinyl or more fragile materials

you can also glue-up smaller pieces to get a 12" width -- wood glue is stronger than wood
