just got an actual, and I think non-ironic, "eh" from one of my Canadian colleagues

I think "eh" and "hey" are basically just Canadian regionalisms of the same thing right?
-
I don't have the data to back this up, but I feel Americans use "hey", "huh", and "right" for sightly different and overlapping contexts. And Canadians can use "eh" in place of all of them with out loss of meaning.
-
I feel like in Alberta we used / heard “ya guy” or “ya buddy” more than “eh” but the real ultimate was “eh buddy”

I've always chalked that up to your American ancestry
