I think Steinbeck put it best when he said that folks in the U.S think they are all just down-on-their-luck millionaires. A complete cultural shift is needed, such as new ways of thinking about game reward systems (how about gathering knowledge instead of in-game currency?)

This is how 45 got elected not despite but because of his greed and vulgarity. We loathe him but want to be in his shoes. We will vote for his kind and against our own interest in hopes we will rise someday. Marx did not agree.

I’ll get a ticket every now and again - then spend the weekend fantasizing about where to move... zillowing houses in that area... going to car websites and building cars (reasonably priced - no Bugatti for me) ... that fantasy entertainment is worth a couple dollars to me
-
Occasionally, if it's an outrageous jackpot, I'll get a ticket and fantasize about being outrageously generous. It's kinda fun to indulge in that fantasy even though I know the odds are impossible, but that fantasy is worth a couple of bucks.
-
Absolutely agree - it’s fun to indulge in the fantasy, as long as you know that there really isn’t much of a chance and you don’t go dumping a lot of $ into it. I know I won’t win, but the time searching houses with the wife for a $2 ticket is as good as $50 movie tickets

Wow. That's a lot of hope and dreams. I think about folks who regularly spend $20-50/week on lotto and hope they get rich. Saved, over time, they'd be in a good position come retirement.

This is an even more fascinating statistic if you think about it at the individual level. For some people lotto tickets is largest portion of 'entertainment' spending

There's a certain mental depression involved with playing the lottery. To us rich people the math looks terrible. My odds of "getting rich" are way better than the odds of winning the lottery. For many kids, pro sports are a good deal, concussions and torn ACLs be damned. /1
-
At some point, the odds get so bad that winning the lottery seems equally possible as all other methods. If you spend $5 a week for 20 years that's only $5k that's hardly the difference between "rich" and "poor". Sure it's a problem, but I think it's a mostly a symptom.

That's availablity bias at work. Lottery companies heavily promote the winners while no one mentions the people who didn't win a bean creating an illusion that they can win big too.

America was built on the lottery! But literally, the colonies used lotteries to raise money back in the 1700s. Britain even chastised us for the practice. (See Ben Franklin autobio)

Wow, had never heard of this! Will certainly look into it. Have always heard that as a society we tend to look more towards lottery during crisis. What's your take on that?

Maybe we don't want everyone to realize their chances of winning are zero. 0.0000000000....
