I'm not particularly current on my readings of this subject. Are there similar findings about the correlation between depression/anxiety and other addictive behaviors (for instance gambling addiction?) Or is there something about "gaming addiction" that seems to set it apart?

That's the first I've seen of looking at addiction in that way. Fascinating! Have you read Unbroken Brain?

Yes! I highly recommend it and following the author here on Twitter

Exactly re: root cause of addiction. It is the depression that sets up the need for SOMETHING to fill the “hole.” There is sadness and anger and the “addiction” could be anything allowing “escape from self/the situation.”

It’s pretty much the same for every addiction disorder. The DSM is just copied and pasted for every different substance. It doesn’t make sense.

Yes, but getting it in actually helps people receive treatment.

And the other underlying factor re: the anxiety - fear. Get to the root of the fear and sadness.

Anything can be an addiction. What determines if any one activity is an addiction is simply which one a person tried first and had some realization that “this activity helps me cope”. Games aren’t specially attractive to one type of depressive over another.

To live in a world where I actually feel like I can make a difference. Then see the actual positive change occur. I get as many chances as I want until it’s perfect.

For my part, I’ve been a gamer for nearly three decades. Have known depression and anxiety for nearly half that. Much, I feel, is rooted in that I was brought up in a society of values and rules, that no one seems to follow. I play games to live in worlds that make more sense.

Yes. Wish more folks would consider root cause when considering problematic behavior.

You could say the same thing about substance abuse. I think it’s about labeling the manifestation rather than underlying cause.

Same with things like sex addiction. Especially in men who deal with depression and anxiety in weird ways. Dont tell Dr Drew..

Right. I'd say that it is a lack of direction and purpose. Drug abuse has the same origin.
