And so, after seeing a somewhat personal exchange take place, I almost replied from that position of Internet Friendship.™

Luckily, I did a quick check: does person know I exist? Doesn't follow me on Twitter. No emails exchanged. No evidence of prior contact.

OH! This isn't an Internet Friend™, this is an Interesting Person I Follow! Which is totally cool. But conversations look different then.

Now, a quick diversion. In college, I spent a while studying something called parasocial relationships.

See, TV reporters have a weird relationship with viewers. Because we (virtually) let them into our HOMES. They're part of our lives.

...only, it's a one-way thing. Which leads to odd breaks when you actually encounter them because only one of you knows of this friendship.

One of my classmates went into broadcast journalism, and has stories about this kind of thing happening to them. Still very real.

...and on social media (and podcasts, and YouTube), it's even more real since you see those conversations. Might even participate in 'em.

And it's easy to miss when the other person is broadcasting to you when you think you're having a 1-on-1 conversation.

My (long-winded) point being: you may view an @ reply as good natured jibing from a friend. But their perspective might be different.

This is a good point! I have made the mistake from the other end, and occasionally get pleasantly surprised realizing "OH THEY DO KNOW ME"!

Also, fun story: coworker got super confused by me tagging you in office shenanigans posts until I explained "no, it's cool, Jane opted in."
