    Why ma'am is sexist & offensive: it is a marker of age/eligibility. Miss is for young/unmarried, ma'am old/married. But why are all men sir!

        @avantgame In the military ma'am is a requirement regardless of age and shows respect. I try to assume people are being polite.

        @SJLandes @avantgame Born and raised in NC, I "ma'am" pretty much all adult women and sometimes little ladies too. Always meant as courtesy

        @avantgame Oh, I'd never heard that! I've never used 'miss', because the Dutch equivalent of it is far less respectful than that for 'ma'am'
