@avantgame Isn't Ma'am more proper/correct if you don't know? I'm told "Miss" is condescending, a la "girl" What do we use then? -
@geoffkeene nothing honestly! I don't call men sir often do you? -
@avantgame Yes, when I don't know them. Like in a supermarket, I say "Excuse me, sir/ma'am" to the employee. Suggested alternative?

@avantgame aren't young men supposed to be Master and old men Sir? Not that that's great either -
@airheadnerd hmmm maybe in theory but I was actually called miss til about 30 -
@avantgame yeah, not saying that's what actually happens. FWIW I basically use mademoiselle all the time

@avantgame In the military ma'am is a requirement regardless of age and shows respect. I try to assume people are being polite. -
@SJLandes@avantgame Born and raised in NC, I "ma'am" pretty much all adult women and sometimes little ladies too. Always meant as courtesy -
@HiJayPosey@avantgame thank you :) courtesy is always nice!!

@avantgame Oh, I'd never heard that! I've never used 'miss', because the Dutch equivalent of it is far less respectful than that for 'ma'am' -
@tha_rami@avantgame Miss, Ms. Mrs. for us. Just Mr. for him. Why. haha -
@Badpie24@avantgame Might totally be an English-specific thing. Had never even really considered that the dichotomy existed. -
@tha_rami@avantgame I think I'd be fine with either one if there was just one!
