Does a game having a prize make you 1) more or less likely to play? and 2) more or less likely to enjoy the game if you do play?

@avantgame 2 can be time-sensitive - e.g., motivated at first, see yourself falling behind (so no prize for you) => demotivated at the end

@avantgame most current research on intrinsic v extrinsic motivation says people would play more aggressively but very differently.

@sbspalding right, an aggressive play is not necessarily what you want to promote, especially in a collaborative or social context!

@avantgame You certainly don't. I am not sure whether prizes inhibit cooperation but they certainly can inhibit intrinsic motivation.

@avantgame Maybe depends on the game? I entered one from an art print shop--it was to write a poem in the voice of one of their characters.

@avantgame Depends if you consider PlayStation trophies to be prizes. They motivate to dig deeper into a game. I enjoy the challenge.

@1JulieMac I do not consider that a prize. :) I do like them though. I mean something with monetary value.

@avantgame Then I would say while they provide a little incentive to play, I never expect to win them. They don't provide more enjoyment.

@avantgame ... it induces anxiety or starts to feel like you're doing it for the prize rather than the joy of the act of trying to get there

@avantgame Prizes do make me more inclined to play but competing directly against others also makes me very self-conscious which ruins it.
