I hope other parents will join with me in requiring an end to this traumatizing practice. No evidence it helps and profound evidence it causes lasting harm: Thanks to active-shooter drills at school, my 4-year-old thought fireworks were gunshots.https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2018/11/01/mom-thanks-active-shooter-drills-school-my-year-old-thought-fireworks-were-gunshots-enough-already/?tid=ss_tw&utm_term=.3f4e941694f6 …

I kept my daughter (6) home from school on the day of the active shooter drill. I teach at the HS, so I knew it was happening.

I would definitely feel better if parents had a schedule and could do this. I would.

Today when I picked up my three year old from school, he asked me how people die and if they “die when bad guys shoot them with shooter guns”.

My daughter and her friend were upstairs playing “sheep, shepherd, wolf” the other day. My daughter said she and her friend were in the closet and had to barricade the door since it didn’t lock. My six year old should NOT know that!

I’ve wondered about this. Do you know - how is this training different from the nuclear bomb training my generation had for a time? Did we also learn that was traumatizing? It could have been.

I remember that too. At least for me and my peers, it wasn’t frightening because we didn’t see schools decimated by nuclear attacks on television. These children know the threat of an armed shooter is real—why rub it in with these useless practices?

My niece and nephew had a shooter on their HS campus. The situation was safely diffused, but there was a lot of dangerous confusion. I would have disliked the training that was described. But they do need some type of safety drill. I don’t know enough to say what’s best.

HS = high school? I think the original tweet was referring to 4 year olds getting active shooter training. I’m glad your family members are safe. 🙏

This is why the majority of teenagers are suffering from anxiety. This is why I call them the PTSD generation. My sophomore had TWO lockdowns last week. One a drill & one so the K9 could sniff for pot. We are traumatizing an entire generation bc the NRA owns the @gop

Fireworks are explosives, and they look an awful lot like what people see in the skyline as their cities/villages are bombed. I still support your point, but I do think fireworks are an Ill-conceived way to celebrate holidays and the kid is picking up on something here, sadly.

Yes. I have to get my high school students refocused after Shooter Drills. I will usually have a few questions to answer before I can get back on topic in class. But, I will say, my students know exactly what they need to do in an active shooter situation.

And, now that everyone in the country knows what will happen, any future shooters will know to come during class changes or bring a shotgun or enough ammunition to get through most doors. If we train children to act like prey animals...

blows my mind that instead of dealing with issues that cause shooters, they spend so much time/money just getting people to hide :/

Trump gets his followers to become the shooters out of anger or fear. The whole environment is toxic because Trump claims the timing is suspect due to the election. As Trump would say, “WRooonnggg!” They are traveling during the best weather for the trek.

It's horrific, traumatizing. Schools are safe places, not places to scare kids.
