Can't take kids to the playground. Can't take dogs for a walk. Can't go running. Feel assaulted in the lungs just walking out the door. When this went on for weeks last fall, it felt like a trauma. Smokesick.

has anyone seen a thoughtful op-ed or first person essay about the mental toll of living through these new extreme fire seasons? please share links. we need to generate some resources to support some semblance of well-being through this, especially if it's the new normal

The opposite of hygge as not a chosen state in the summer to be inside & less active. Also contributing to mood is the lack of sun blocked by the smoke. We are under a pettifog murk.
-
YES. I was thinking the same thing actually... wondering if we could "hygge" our way through it and pretend we're holed up inside to be cosy from the dark winter instead of the smoke summer

The n95 malaise?, smoke entrapment? respiratory repression? smoke funk? I’m currently getting a break from it “knock on wood” but I’ve spent too many months in the state your referring to as cal insists on burning to the ground daily
-
n95 had a good ring to it... like h1n1. solidarity/sympathy to you!

Back at you! we are still dealing with the aftermath of a lot of our neighborhood burning down in July, it’s been a crazy year here

The grays. Like the blues, but grey.

That's really good.

Thanks! It cleared out of here today, at last. Been hot and horrible for about a week.

Wondering how the responders deal with smoke stress exhaustion and longer term physical and mental health. New normal?
-
that's the fear. (new normal) definitely creating long-term health implications... i am really curious about if anyone is forecasting that
-
I’ve seen some on climate refugees including wealthy coastal and arid farm lands. It’s global but is hyper local as you describe

Doesn't "miasma" describe the phenomenon? Hope you find some better-quality air! We have plenty to share in Scotland / Dundee...

Sounds a little like the risks astronauts face during long-term shared confinement in space and, given the hazard of particulates, the risks they will face during planetary operations. NASA is beginning to research the interactions. https://humanresearchroadmap.nasa.gov/evidence/

Stay inside while air is toxic and work on solving an issue you care about. Maybe gamers can come up with an invention turning toxic air into clean air.
