I'm curious how and why the term "game inventor" became more common on the mass market side of the industry while "game designer" is the common term on the hobbyist side. Any insights?

My best go to metaphor for describing the job to outsiders has always been “Author”. This immediately leads to publisher, editors and royalties as next steps intuitively related for the general public. Incidentally Game Author is exactly what it is called in Germany.
