All points made in the thread are GREAT and it's good advice! The one thing to also consider (and she does mention it), is there's a decent chance that the longer the break, the more various things can happen which can decrease the chance you'll actually go even if you want to.

Just thought to mention it cuz that's what happened to me. Would the same things have happened if I had gone directly to grad school? Hard to know since each path takes us on so many other sub-paths! But at this point a big part of me still wants to go but it's now impractical to

So I often do find myself kinda wishing I had either just gone directly or given myself a cut-off point (say, 2-3 years) in which to stop whatever I was doing at the time, reassess, and decide. Now, I've kinda mostly made peace w/ the idea that I won't go and that's ok too!

If I were giving advice to a young undergrad I would say to still take some time off, yeah. But also set a definite timeline and deadline in which to really take pause, do some math (both literal and figurative), make a decision, and then maybe set another deadline if need be.
