Videogame "addiction" is compensatory, escapist behavior stemming from untreated depression or anxiety. You can't treat this by focusing on games. You treat this by targeting the real underlying problem, which by the way --https://twitter.com/NYTHealth/status/1009271663442227200 …

Although the addiction may be present initially as a coping mechanism, could it also be seen as (once initiated) to be something similar to gambling addiction? Bright lights, points escalating, endorphins releasing, etc?

Well said. I've been referred dozens of clients identified as "Gaming Addicts," & I've never found it to be just that. The gaming is always a coping mechanism to deal with underlying issues. These cases just become educatingparents & testing underlying mental health needs.

As I see it, the problem isn't the diagnosis itself, but that most healthcare providers don't understand gaming or culture enough to know what is healthy or unhealthy, and they won't require that education in order to diagnose someone.

@avantgame as you have always said: society will play games. The worse the forces that would keep us from playing become, the more we will double down and get serious about the what role games actually play in our lives. Keep being the hero of your story! Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

I’m actually acutely aware that gaming is a crutch and it holds me back. I just lack the mental fortitude to get help or change. It’s part of my depression loop that I can’t ever really seem to escape from.

It unfortunately stems from a much greater trend that I've seen in the media which is to take whatevers newest and blame it for all of societies problems. Game developers are demonized for their creations when we're just trying to make money/learn and create entertainment
