-- for many gamers is tied to large, systemic issues of economic insecurity, social alienation, fear of violence, trauma from serving in wars, the daily grind of suffering racism and sexism and lack of compassion in our elected leaders... I mean JUST STOP BLAMING GAMES.

I was waiting for your response to this story that hit yesterday. I know I had strong feelings about it, but I knew you’d have a more professional response.

It's so ludicrous I want to swear and curse and be totally unprofessional.
-
I hear you. I'm still really confused how/why WHO decided to classify 'gaming disorder' before establishing clearly defined diagnosis criteria and evidence based treatment protocols.
-
as far as I can tell they were heavily lobbied by well-meaning clinicians who want to be able to get their treatment programs reimbursed by insurance so patients can afford them. that's my understanding
-
I'm sure very well intended, but the move is premature. From what I understand there are usually underlying anxiety related disorders associated with problematic play - would make sense for clinicians to treat those until researchers get closer to consensus.

Unfortunely we currently live in a culture that is hyper focused on the means people use to deal with their mental health struggles without wanting to actually deal with the roots of the mental health issues. Heaven forbid we actually have to commit to change

well said!!

Thank you for that! Been thinking the same for quite long time and I'm glad I'm not alone. They are not considering that people may be using games as an escapism or as a way to overshadow bad situations in their lives, etc

This is true. Also true is the fact that many "freemium" game developers knowingly exploit these issues to make their games more psychologically addicting in the same way gambling is. The intentionally crafted compulsion to play ends up bankrupting people. :( It's so awful.

My mother is a psychologist and has been working with addicts for 20+ years. She says this about addictions: “The substance people are addicted to is not the core reason for their addiction.” All addicts have traumas, untreated disorders etc. that are being exacerbated.

I’ve heard an addiction clinic head say drug addiction and religious zealotry are similar as well. Both equally annoying.

This! This makes me think of how people think about Cannabis “addiction” (the substance not being addictive in itself). For some this is a coping mechanism. A like other coping mechanisms, gaming can be both an adaptive and maladaptive one.

Even the "big book" of AA calls alcohol consumption itself a "symptom." For gaming there isn't even a chemical dependency that develops. This is a psychological dependence along the same lines as gambling.

Haven‘t they still read the medical study from HarvardMedicalSchool / Book by Olson & Kutner ??? They already showed that reason for school shootings is not games, but depression.
